Customer Service Workers.

For many years I worked in the service industry. So I am very aware that it is in many instances a thankless job. You basically go in to collect a paycheck. Particularly when you are a phone person. Whether its inbound or outbound - it's not always easy. Having done every possible customer service job I have a great amount of respect and sympathy for these workers. I only call when I have to and I go into it with the mindset that the person on the other end of the line is there to help. So with that in mind I had two phone calls to make this morning.
First up I got to call the student loan people - My first payment was due this month. I made sure to go to their website and get it paid early just so I wouldn't forget. And a whole day later the money was deducted from my bank account. Fast forward a week later - it shows as being delinquent. I call to inquire about it. I am told repeatedly by the person on the other end of the phone that my payment has not been made and perhaps when I paid it via my bank account's website I accidentally sent it to the company who previously held my loan (how is that possible if this is my FIRST EVER PAYMENT???). When I said that wasn't possible as I used their website to make my payment and I received a confirmation # she said that I needed to call my bank and ensure the money was deducted. I offered to send her a screenshot showing the deduction. I had already told her how I paid, when I paid and that I had a confirmation. But she couldn't find it. So of course I must not have actually paid it!! So she gave me options to pay it. I explained that since the money had been deducted from my account already, I would not be able to make another payment until November. A few minutes later she somehow found my confirmation number but has no idea why it isn't credited to my account. She promised to make a note of the confirmation so it would stop showing delinquent and wouldn't have an effect on my credit. We'll see in a couple of days if they figure can get it fixed.

Second call was to the water company in Nashville. They sent me a bill that said it was past due. I was confused as I have in my safe the "final bill" that I received from them last year. But in 2011 the local govt passed a stormwater fee of $1.50/month. And they are supposed to bill it quarterly. So I get this bill for $36.00 and of course I'm confused. So I call to inquire about it and the person I spoke to didn't seem to understand that I was trying to figure out why this is the 1st bill I've received. (since I own the property I am responsible for fee) She first said it was because when they enacted the law for the fee, it took them awhile to get the 1st bills out to everyone. But then she said they had been sending the bills to me but they were being returned. And that my address was only recently updated in August 2013. So I said, well since supposedly the bills were returned, could you reprint them and send them to me? She said I needed to talk to my congressman. (WTH?) So then I asked how was it possible that bills were being returned when almost 2 years ago they received this as my mailing address, and in 2012 they sent me my final bill?? She said something to the effect of - so you are saying that you received the other bills? - And then that I was not listening to her. By this point I was SO frustrated. I'm sure she was also because she clearly didn't understand anything I was saying. She had no idea why I never received the other bills. And if there were other bills, why would she mention that it took time to get the bills out? At that point I just said when should I expect another bill and how much would it be? She then attempted to give me a math lesson letting me know that it was $1.50 a month times 4 so it'll be $4.50. But if I want to, I can pay the entire year upfront, but she she needed a minute to figure out how much that would be. I was DONE!  I finally just said thank you and have a good day.

So frustrating... Not the best way to start off a Monday Morning. Now that I've vented - I'm off to finish my housework! Days off are wonderful - especially when you just get to lounge around. But I did that yesterday so today I catch up on housework!! :-) Happy Monday people.
