I grew up going to a very traditional predominately black Baptist Church. We would begin each service with a song, followed by the reading of a few scriptures, and then one of the Deacons would pray. And pray and pray. Often the 10 minute (sometimes longer) prayer would end in a hymn that only the people over 60 seemed to know. I loved my church. I loved the people. Looking back now, I realize while I learned a lot of Bible stories and a lot of songs I but didn't learn how to pray. So as I got older and began attending church in college, I began to wonder about it. I had some questions. I would hear people saying pray about it and let it go. What the heck did that mean? I heard words like supplication. Again I ask what does that mean??? As a teen I didn't have google to help me find these things out. However in college I found a wonderful church where our pastor didn't only focus on preaching but he has a heart to TEACH as well. He encourages us to ask question and not take his word for what The WORD says. He encourages us to look it up for ourselves. So with this series I will be giving scriptures. Most of them will come from the New International Version. I will always make sure to include the version and where the verses can be found. I will try to keep my posts to a reasonable length and I'm going begin the series by spending a few days answering the following questions. If you have any questions you'd like me to answer please post it in the comments section. Here are some of the questions I will be exploring answers to.
Why should I pray?
When should I pray?
Where should I pray?
What should I pray for?
Who do I pray to?
Does it have to be in a special way or a certain place?
Do I have to kneel beside my bed?
What's the point of being on my knees when I pray?
How do I know my prayer has been heard?
I'll leave you with the first prayer I remember learning.
As I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep/
Thy love guide me through the night,
And wake me with the morning light.
Amen
I'll see you tomorrow.
Dont you just love bible based teaching focused churches?
ReplyDeleteI do! I've noticed that some churches seem to have forgotten how important it is to actually teach the Word and not just preach about it. I also am finding more places that do ACTUAL outreach and not just talking about it.
