What's your birth story? Not when you had your baby, but when you were born?
Mom and I were talking and I mentioned how grateful I am to her and daddy that they had my sister. I can not imagine life without her. When I mentioned how much I would have loved more siblings, mom told me why she and daddy only had the two of us. She would have liked to have had more. She started by telling me about when I was born. My estimated due date was September 28. My mom was super tiny. She's 5'3 and entering her final month of pregnancy she weighed about 120 lbs. She noticed some bleeding during the second week of Sept. so her OB did an ultrasound and it showed partial placenta previa. That means the placenta was covering part of the cervical opening. And as I was attempting to move into position for delivery, I was pressing on the placenta causing bleeding. This is something that can correct itself and if it does so before the due date or labor beginning, there's no problem. If it doesn't correct itself, vaginal delivery is life threatening to mother and baby. In my case, after waiting another week to be sure that it was not going to correct itself , mom was scheduled to have a c-section on the 15th. Being that it was only a couple of weeks before my edd the doctor was confident that I would be fine. And I came into the world kicking and screaming at a weight of 4 lbs. 4 ounces and I'll tell you that I resembled E.T. with my huge eyes and head too big for my body!! She doesn't remember my length but the family says I fit in my uncles hand with the top of my head at the tip of his middle finger and my legs barely just at his wrist! She said the doctors were worried that I wasn't ready after all, so they ran some test and I was fine. Just super small. Because of her section, she had to stay in the hospital for 5 days - when we left the hospital I had gained all of .4 ounces!! Fast forward a year and she was pregnant again! Very excited to be having another little girl. Due Feb 14th. Towards the beginning of her pregnancy a family friend had a baby by c-section. Unfortunately, that friend went in for her section, and didn't come out of the anesthesia. My mother was so scared. She knew she was having another c-section and she was worried that something might happen and she could die. I can not imagine what she felt going through that. She didn't want to do the epidural because friends who had done it had said they could feel too much. So she hoped for the best. And all was fine. My sister came in a few days early weighing in at a healthy 6 lbs 7 oz. And after they took her out, they tied her tubes. Back then (don't know about now) my mother and my father had to sign a waiver to have the tubes tied. She was only 24 and they didn't like doing that procedure on someone so young and since she was married - dad had to sign that he was ok with it.
I told all this to my husband who then wondered about his mother's delivery. He knows she wasn't able to have any more kids after him but didn't know anything else. So I called mil and she told me about it - Like my mother, she is petite! Just barely 5'1 and at 9 months pregnant weighed 115 lbs. Two weeks before he was born she began to leak. A little bit each day, with some contractions until she went into labor. by then much of the antibiotic fluid had leaked out. (If that happened today, she probably would have been forced to induce labor.) Anyways, she labored for 18 hours w/no drugs. She didn't want the epidural so when she neared complete dilation, they offered her something else to help with the pain of the "ring of fire". She said it didn't help much and the way they had her pushing contributed to severe tearing. Anyways hubby was 6 lbs 7 oz! And she says he was the most beautiful baby. With the cutest little rolls you've ever seen! And one of these days, she'll remember to the box out and send me the pictures! A few years later she had multiple cysts on her cervix and tubes. She was barely 25 and had a full hysterectomy. She would have filled her home with children also. She's an amazing mother - they both are! If I find some good pictures of us as babies, I'll add them to this post. I know I have some of me, I just need to find the right box!
Have a great friday! The weekend is almost here and I for one am ready for it!!
